What are custom orthotics?

Orthotics are insoles designed to support and realign the foot. Unlike off-the-shelf insoles, custom orthotics are made from a scan of your own feet, so the support matches the shape of your arches and the way your feet carry load.

Because your feet are the base of the body, imbalances there can contribute to pain not only in the feet but sometimes in the knees, hips and back too.

Who can benefit?

  • People with heel pain or plantar fasciitis
  • Flat feet or high arches that cause aching or fatigue
  • Recurring callus from uneven pressure
  • Bunion pain and forefoot pressure
  • Runners, walkers and people who play sport
  • Anyone who spends long hours on their feet at work

How the fitting works

  1. Assessment — Ian looks at your feet, your symptoms, your footwear and how you use your feet day to day.
  2. Scan — your feet are scanned to capture their exact shape.
  3. Made for you — your Foot Levelers orthotics are custom-made from the scan.
  4. Fitting — your orthotics are fitted, with advice on wearing them in and on suitable footwear.

Common questions

What's the difference between custom orthotics and shop-bought insoles?

Shop-bought insoles are made to fit an average foot. Custom orthotics are made from a scan of your own feet, so the support is shaped to you.

Do custom orthotics fit in normal shoes?

They are designed to be worn in everyday shoes. Ian will advise which of your shoes they'll work best in, and whether a different style would suit your footwear.

How long does it take to get used to orthotics?

Most people wear them for a short time at first and build up over a week or two. Ian will explain how to break them in.
